Build credit

What comes after a secured card?

The goal is a useful credit record without cash locked in a deposit or fees paid for a starter account.

The short answer

Review the account’s conversion and closure terms before you act. Protect the history, clear the balance, and recover the deposit under the agreement.

  • Ask whether the issuer reviews the account for conversion.
  • Confirm a zero balance before closure or deposit return.
  • Check your reports after the issuer updates the account.
  • The catch: opening several replacement cards at once can add cost and new-account activity.

Review

Ask whether the account can change in place

Some agreements may allow a move to an unsecured account; others do not. Ask whether the issuer reviews the account, whether a new application is required, and what terms would change. Do not assume a date.

Verify

Check the balance and the reported status

01

Pay the balance

Confirm the account shows no amount due.

02

Save the terms

Keep the deposit and closure disclosures.

03

Read the reports

Check how the issuer reports any change or closure.

Deposit

Know the amount, method, and timing of the return

Cash check

The agreement controls when the deposit returns and whether any unpaid amount is taken from it. Keep records until the cash arrives and the account balance stays at zero.

Next step

Keep the history and lose the starter cost

Move when

  • You have a defined need for another card.
  • The new terms are stronger.
  • The old balance and deposit path are clear.

Wait when

  • The current card has no ongoing cost.
  • You would open several accounts at once.
  • You are chasing a promised point gain.
