Can rent reporting help your credit?
It can add rent payment data to a credit report. Whether that changes a score depends on the model and the rest of your file.
The short answer
Reported rent can help some credit scores, especially when the file has little payment history. It does not have a fixed point value.
- All VantageScore models can use rent when it reaches a nationwide credit report.
- FICO Score 9, 10, and 10T can use reported rent.
- Earlier FICO versions may not use the tradeline.
- The catch: late rent can also become reported information.
Score models
The tradeline must reach a model that reads it
| Model family | Can use reported rent? | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| VantageScore models | Yes | Data must reach a nationwide report. |
| FICO Score 9, 10, 10T | Yes | A lender may use another version. |
| Earlier FICO versions | May not | Do not assume the tradeline enters the score. |
The signal
Rent adds payment history, not revolving credit
The tradeline can add another record of payment. It does not create a card limit, reduce card balances, or add an installment loan. That makes it a narrow tool.
The limit
No service can know the score a future lender will use
Reality check
A report change and a score change are different events. A score change and a lender decision are different again. Do not let a point estimate collapse those steps.
Use the evidence
A thin file has more room for new information
More plausible value
- Little reported payment history.
- Rent is consistently on time.
- Coverage matches a likely score use.
Less plausible value
- Several active accounts already report.
- You need a fixed score gain.
- The lender model is unknown.
