Build credit

What does a credit-builder loan really cost?

Ignore the small monthly number for a moment. The price is what leaves your pocket and does not come back.

The short answer

Subtract the cash released at the end from every scheduled payment and required fee.

  • Add every payment in the schedule.
  • Add administration, membership, or other required fees.
  • Subtract the amount the lender says it will release to you.
  • The catch: a low payment can still create a high total cost when the term is long or fees repeat.
Rung does not rank providers on this page. The analysis follows our editorial policy and uses the same cost method as our calculator.
The formula

Total cost = total paid − cash released

Total paid includes every scheduled payment and every required fee.

Scheduled payments = payment amount × number of payments

Total paid = scheduled payments + required fees

Total cost = total paid − cash released at the end

Worked example

A $35 payment is not a $35 price

This illustration is not an offer. It shows how the shared method reconciles the cash.

Total cost
$138
The amount that does not return
Total paid
$855
$35 × 24, plus a $15 fee
Cash released
$717
The amount received at completion

$855 paid minus $717 released is $138 in total cost. Across 24 payments, the average cost is $5.75. Use $138 as the main decision number.

The tradeoff

Cost is not the only money constraint

Cash stays locked

The released amount may look like savings, but it cannot cover an emergency during the term.

Fees may sit outside the payment

A required membership or administration charge belongs in total paid even when it appears on another line.

Decision rule

Choose an offer only when its total cost, reporting coverage, payment schedule, and release terms all work. If one is unclear, keep comparing.
